800.01An Aberdeenshire Farmer’s Diary The book covers the years 1768 - 1815

An Aberdeenshire Farmer’s Diary
From The Transactions of the Banffshire Field Club

A NORTHERN DIARY.

Mr Barclay said -

There has came into my hands the diary of John Allardise, who was tenant of Lower Plaidy. It is contained in two manuscript volumes. The first begins with the year 1768 and takes end (in two torn leaves) with 1807 Mr Allardise carries on the second volume until 1815, in which year, on September 4, he died. In circumstances detailed below, the diary was continued by his friend, who was also one of his executors, John Pirrie, farmer in Woodhead of Lathers, who takes up the narrative from the middle of 1815 and carries it on  to 1826, when it ends. On the present occasion we deal only with the diary that was written by Mr Allardise, leaving the part that was compiled by Mr Pirrie for (possible) future treatment. The narrative that it provides will, we think, be found to be of more than ordinary interest.

The book is the property of Mr Alex. Ledingham of Fintry, whose family is of ancient settlement in the Lower Plaidy district. In the diary he notes of  the experiences of the years are preceded by over a dozen pages in which the writer enters in much detail on his family history.

John Allardise, Lower Plaidy
Mr Allardyce died on September 4, 1815. Note the spelling of Allardyce varies in the document.

PDF 2 STATE OF RELIGION
PDF 3 FUNERAL USAGES.

" ... It was not considered respectful to the memory of a deceased friend if a quantity of strong drink was not consumed at his funeral - a mark of respect which was often  too faithfully paid to him In consequence the guests often became intoxicated. I never saw a case of intoxication at a funeral; from what follows, however, it will be seen that a supply of strong drink was offered sufficient to exhilarate, if not to intoxicate, those who partook of all that was offered them. ..."

800.04 Katie Johnston (1806 -1900) Whitehills, Echt

This scan "details" the life of Katie Johnston.

Katie walked from her home to Aberdeen and back. I believed that this was documented within the scan. As yet I have not located the page.

John Urquhart (1914 - ) certainly told others and I that she walked back and forth to Aberdeen.

This is the location of Katie's cottage:-

Gaelic   Anglicised
Spelling  form       Meaning Example

Maigh     Moy     Plain     Moira (Maigh Rath - Plain of the fort)
Rath    Rath     Fort     Rathfriland (Rath Fraoileann - Fraiole's fort)

The plain of Mar makes more "sense" so it would appear that the original "g" in Migmar has been mistakenly transcribed as a "d"

Cromar - the bowl of Mar also makes sense when looking down on Tarland area from the surrounding hills   - Willim # # #

Sauchen - Williow  Sauchen bus, Glen Saugh, the Sauchs, Savoch, or Sauk of Deer, etc.
Waulkmill - fulling mill - Concise Scots Dictionary 1985
Waulk - waulk, walk, wack, wak, wauk to make cloth thick and felted by a process of soaking and beating and shrinking Concise Scots Dictionary 1985

There are six estates Cluny, Castle Fraser, Linton, Kebbaty, Midmar and Corsindae, either wholly or partially in the parish of Cluny.

800.11 David Kerr Cameron - The Ballad and the Plough

David Kerr Cameron - The Ballad and the Plough

If as stated in these pages 19% of children were illegitimate we only need a three generations before the likelihood of parentage slips to 53%, only marginally better than 50 - 50. More mythology in some cases.

On the family tree sometimes the first child was "illegitimate" but was "integrated" when the parents were married. In other cases where the parents did not marry they often lived with their grandmothers and were their mother or father's "little brother" or "little sister".

0.81 * 0.81 * 0.81 = 0.53

As such this reduces the certainty of Family Trees and ancestry at least in some instances.
